I recently got a message on Face Book from a woman desperate to lose weight. She had part of her thyroid removed, exercised regularly, ate a clean diet and hadn’t lost a pound or inch in a year. Talk about frustration!
I checked with my good friend and gluten expert, Dr. Peter Osborne and asked for some input. First of all, here’s a video I did to ask Dr. Osborne some questions about gluten intolerance:
And here’s what he had to say regarding my client’s issue:
A new study sheds light on the fact that selenium deficiency can be caused by gluten induced mal-absorption. The researchers go on to say that Selenium deficiency can cause thyroid diseases and can lead to unregulated inflammatory damage…
It is no medical mystery that gluten can cause vitamin and mineral deficiencies. Selenium is a mineral with multiple functions within the body. A short list of some of selenium’s more common roles is listed below:
- It plays a role in the production of active thyroid hormone (see chart below).
- It is a powerful anti-inflammatory and helps to regulate immune function.
- It plays a role in blood viscosity (reduces excessive clotting of the blood).
- It drives the most powerful antioxidant system in the body.
This study points out that no only does gluten induced selenium deficiency cause abnormal thyroid hormone production, it leads to excessive inflammation and autoimmune disease.
I have discussed how going on a gluten free diet can lead to fat loss. This is one of those mechanisms as hypothyroid disease is a common manifestation of gluten intolerance.
It is time for doctors to start ruling out gluten sensitivity and celiac disease in patients with thyroid disease. It is time for doctors to start recognizing the therapeutic benefit of a gluten free diet.
If you think that this information will help someone you love suffering with a thyroid problem, please forward this along and send them to Dr. Osborne’s blog: http://goo.gl/jXhK6

Shawna (and Dr. Osborne), thanks so much for this. I will definitely follow up with DNA testing, as I feel I’m subject to many of the symptoms you’ve described. About 6 years ago, I was diagnosed with a thyroid disease, and was treated with radioactive iodine. In the last 2 or 3 years I’ve really felt that my body is resistant to weight loss, or that I simply have a very slow metabolism. Lately I’ve had very low energy levels (chalked it up to the February blues), and even problematic skin. It would be great to either rule out gluten intolerance, or learn to deal with it. Thanks again for this information 🙂
@Lisa: Keep me posted, glad this was a help to you.
How timely was this to stumble on! I have struggled with hypothyroidism for about 5 years now and have found it hard to regulate my thyroid function even using desiccated thyroid. Low metabolism, fatigue, brain fog, shedding hair are all part of my challenges. I always had a gut feeling that my thyroid problems were secondary to something else. Through my alternative medicine doctor I had an ELIZA test that indicated positive for several food allergies, including gluten. My family doctor dismissed this as quackery, and would not test me for gluten sensitivity. I never really went Gluten free, I ate just enough to keep me feeling miserable!
Recently, on vacation we ate in a lot of restaurants and because of limited options i ate much more gluten that I normally do. Within days my hair was falling out in handfuls every time I shampooed. I was bloated, fatigued and achy all over. I developed itchy blistery skin.
When I returned home, I completely cut out gluten and within a week all of these symptoms resolved! I am going back to my doctor and DEMANDING further testing!
@Judy: I highly recommend further testing. Dr. Osborne suggests that regular testing at a doctor’s office is inconclusive and doesn’t test the full spectrum so I suggest staying close to his blog/site and even buying a test kit from him. I know him personally and he is passionate and honest in his desire to help those suffering. All the best to you, thanks for sharing and keep us posted!

Thank you so much for this post. I was recently diagnosed with “Pre-Hashimoto’s” after I miscarried our 2nd baby last October. I had never had and still don’t have any normal sypmtoms Since then, I’ve tried to be proactive and preemptive in treating myself, but my doctor recently told me I was fine for now, and that would come later. I’m going to start going to a naturopathic doctor and holistic dentist. Additionally, I’m researching the best supplements to take for my condition and best foods to eat. Thank you again, this was very helpful
Crystal: All the best to you, thanks for sharing.
