As promised, I wanted to share one of my fitness secrets. Actually, two things today…
I’ve been working out for many years and I feel I’m making gains in my fitness journey all the time. One of the ways that I’m able to do this is to log my workouts.
The second ‘secret ingredient’ is to maintain intensity in my workouts. I need to do something I’ve never done before in order to look and perform in ways that I never have before. Makes sense right? Your body is continually adapting to the challenges you give it, so you need to up the challenge all the time.
Here’s a short video where I explain ways that I use my fitness journal to continually challenge my body, maintain workout intensity and avoid injury:
The Secret to Workout Success? from Shawna Kaminski on Vimeo.
Shawna, Thanks for this post. I think one really important thing you said was that, as you age you can’t expect to improve intensity, reps, etc., but to be able to maintain at your current level means you’re being successful in your workouts. Very encouraging. One question – do you work out 7 days a week?
@Mary Jane – I probably take a day off once a week and call that my ‘active rest’ day. On this day I’ll do something active like walk my dog, but it won’t have the intensity that my other workouts will have. I know that as I age, I have to listen to my body so the active rest day is sometimes spontaneous depending on how I’m feeling.
